Lets give this a go. Now first I'm going to hit you with a lot of warm up stuff.
When you connect the device, does the PC respond in any way?
If you go into Device manager on the PC and connect the Treo,(With the screen on) Does device flash, open or close, show any sign that new hardware has been seen.
Are you connecting to a USB hub? Has it ever worked?
Have you gone into Start/Settings/Connections Tab and found USB to PC, Is the box checked? Have you tried syncing with it unchecked?
If you go into ActiveSync on the device and click on menu/connections is USB selected.
On the PC if you open ActiveSync then goto File/Connection settings. Is USB checked there?
Can you disable any and all security software and firewalls?
Ok just read the past threads.
Right click on My computer and give us what it says there. Do you see 64 bit anywhere?
Did you have the device connected when you installed ActiveSync?
Have you hard reset this device yet?

Thanks for your quick reply. I am at my office rather than my home, so I will give you the answers as best as I remember.
1. The PC does not respond in any way when I connect the TREO
2. Not sure about Device Manager, as I have never been there on the PC - in fact didn't know it even exsisted!!!!
3. I connect directly to the PC through a working USB port - in fact it is where I synch my older, and reliable 650.
4. Yes, I have gone to the Start/Settings/Connections Tab and the box was checked, and I tried to sync with and without the check.
5. USB is checked on the menu/connections
6. It is checked on the PC as well
7.I hadn't tried disabling the security or the firewall.
I will not be home til 7:00 PM EDT, but will do whatever you instruct at that time. Thanks again for your quick response and help.

I think we're either having a driver install issue or maybe a bad cable.

Check under Device Manager if there's a Question mark or Exclamation mark when connecting your phone and if it does that would mean that the driver wasn't installed correctly and if it doesn't you may need to change your USB sync cable.
What to do if there's a Questioni or Exclamantion mark on the device manager:
= You just right click then update driver and locate Drivers folder under c:\program files\activesync\drivers then that should do the trick.
You should be seeing a Windows CE USB Devices then a sub Smartphone USb Sync if Advance network functionality is uncheck.
IF Advance network functionanlity is Check you should be seeing under Network Adapters a Windows CE based devices, it is recommended to just uncheck this box if your the environment you are currently working use some Firewalls, Anti-virus etc..

I went through all the recommended steps I found online and spent 2 hours with palm support and 1 hour with Dell support and still was unable to connect my att palm treo 750 using activesync when I had successfully done so in the past. I am using a treo 750 with winmobile 5 ver and activesync 4.2 connecting to win XP pro. I would see the phone in my device manager but it would not connect. This is what I discovered that fixed my problem and not just on my Dell computer but another computer I have as well. I would go into the phone to Start/Settings/Connections Tab and found USB to PC and check the box to allow advanced connections. I would then remove the battery. unplug the USB cable and reinstall the battery. After phone boot up, plug usb in and attempt connection again and it would fail. Again open on the phone the Start/Settings/Connections Tab and found USB to PC and uncheck the box to allow advanced connections. If connection fails (it probably will) pull battery from phone and unplug USB. reinstall battery to reboot phone then plug the USB cable back in. My device would again connect.. This needs to be done every once in a while because of the buggy phone and/or activesync software. I hope this helps anyone and prevents them from wasting as much time as I have on keeping an otherwise good phone in sync with an xp computer. Peace and long live a free internet and quality software....
