Synching with Vista 64 and Windows Mobile Device Center

I have several Treo 750's (upgraded to Windows Mobile 6) and we are trying to synch them with WMDC 6.1 under Vista 64.  WMDC does not recognise that the phone is connected to the computer through the USB port.  These phones synch fine with activesynch on our Windows XP 32bit machines.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling WMDC several times with no luck.  We have tried synching after a hard reset on the phones but no luck.  The computer does not recognise that the phone is there.  Before we upgraded to Mobile 6 when we connected the phone, the computer recognised it and we could browse the phone, but it wouldnt synch.  Now with Windows Mobile 6 we cant even do that.  We are getting along by synching the phones to our laptops which have Windows XP, but it would be nice to be able to use our desktops.

Has anybody sucessfully synched a Mobile 6 device with WMDC 6.1 under Vista 64bit?

Have you tried using a different USB port to see if this makes a difference?

Re: Synching with Vista 64 and Windows Mobile Device Center

Hi, yes, I have tried different USB ports.  I uninstalled WMDC and then reinstalled it twice and got slightly better results.  I read in another list that you need to install WMDC two times on a 64bit system to make it actually work.  The first time just preps the machine, and then the second time actually installs the software, but the software install won't tell you that you need to do the install twice.

Doing this and rebooting lets the computer and WMDC 6.1 see my phone for about a minute or two, but after that, the computer can't see the phone and thinks that it has been disconnected.  If I reboot again, the computer will see my phone for a couple of minutes again.

Using the same USB cable and phone, the XP machines in my office see the phone all the time without any problems.  Also, I use the USB ports on the Vista 64bit machine for other devices and I havent had any problems with them, so I think the USB port is ok.

If I unplug and then replug my phone into the USB port after WMDC looses contact with the phone, I get a message that the "USB Devise is Not Recognized".  I think that the 64bit USB driver on the Vista 64bit machine is screwed up, and is not quite compatible with Windows Mobile on the phone.  I am using Windows Mobile 6 now, but I had the same problems with Windows Mobile 5.

Re: Synching with Vista 64 and Windows Mobile Device Center

A few more questions:

1. Is Windows Live OneCare installed on your PC? If yes, this might be preventing your Treo from connecting properly and we will need to reconfigure it. What anti-virus / internet security programs do you have installed?

2. Did you have the device connected while installing WMDC? This is a good idea with the Windows Mobile handhelds and Windows Vista as it allows the PC to discover the Treo. If you didn't, can you close all anti-virus / internet security programs and reinstall again with the Treo connected.

3. Does your PC have Bluetooth that we can try syncing over?

Is your computer even recognizing the device being plugged into the computer?

Also on the device you can check these settings go to start/settings/connections/usb to pc. If the box is checked uncheck it or vice versa.

Re: Synching with Vista 64 and Windows Mobile Device Center

Hi Thanks for the response.

1. I don't have Live One Care installed.  I dont have any antivirus installed, it is handeled by our server.

2. i did have the Treo connected during the install.

3. I dont have bluetooth.  We have a microwave dish on the roof and it causes too much electromagnetic interference in the office for bluetooth to work.

4. I think that the computer is partially recognising the device, because whenever I connect the Treo, I get the Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter to appear in the device manager, but the WDMC does not see the device.

5. I tried to turn the advanced network functionality off on the Treo, but I get an error saying "Failed to Disable RNDIS to Use Serial" and it wont let me uncheck the box.  I have no idea what this means.

I am pretty much at a loss at this point.

Re: Synching with Vista 64 and Windows Mobile Device Center

OK, the last message here was February 2008; it is now July 2008.  I just noticed that Microsoft is supplying a 64 bit version of their Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 driver for Windows Vista (64 bit) at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=4F68EB56-7825-43B2-AC89-2030ED98ED95&displa...

I just talked to a Palm salesman yesterday and he said all their phones still will not be synchronized with any Vista 64 Bit OS; their literature recommends 32 bit only.

I am contemplating upgrading my Treo 600 to a Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6 Professional.  I am trying to figure out how to synchronize the software before I purchase anything.  I think now that Microsoft has solved the problem, not Palm and nobody in Palm or my cell phone provider (Rogers here in Canada) knows this yet.

Does anybody have any experience with this ongoing 64 bit Vista problem and the Treo 750.

Also if I get positive answers here, where do I go next to figure out how to bring over my Palm Treo 600  data.  Since the operating system is different, I think I am stuck with exporting my contact addresses to a csv file.  I do not know how I would recover my mail.  I have not been using Outlook, just PalmOneMail v1.02a.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick Urquhart

There should be no problems syncing a windows mobile device to a 64 bit os, just make sure you install the 64 bit version of wmdc.

Re: Synching with Vista 64 and Windows Mobile Device Center

[ Edited ]
I have been using the 64bit version of WMDC and it will not synch my 750 with the Palm.  I know several people who have Treo 750's and no one has been able to synch with 64bit Vista.  I actually don't have the problem anymore because my company has migrated all of our computers back to XP. There were so many other problems with Vista, and XP did everything that we needed, so we decided to wait and see if Microsoft can get it right on the next OS.

Re: Synching with Vista 64 and Windows Mobile Device Center

Thanks for all your replies.  This is essentially the meat of my question.  Has anybody out there successfully been able to synchronize a Palm Treo 750 using MS Windows Vista and the 64 bit version of WMDC?  If not we are caught between Palm "officially" telling us it does not work and Microsoft telling us all their software works as intended.  I will not move ahead until I get a positive assurance with this critical question.

Thanks,

Rick
