Playlist on Palm Pre

Can you create a playlist from songs already on your pre like you can with an ipod?

Is there any other simple way to add a playlist on your pre from a Mac/itunes?

Re: Playlist on Palm Pre

There is no way to create a playlist from within the factory music app.

Itunes 8.2 is compatible with the pre.  Newer versions are not.  Download double twist from Doubletwist.com for free. Double twist will automatically import all of your itunes music into Doubletwist.  You can create and import customized playlists into your pre.  Let me know if you need any help with Doubletwist.  Good luck.

Re: Playlist on Palm Pre

You CAN create playlist on the fly within the free music app called Music Remix.  I think it is a homebrew app.  I have it and works great.  looks and operates just like the factory Palm app, but with many added features.

Re: Playlist on Palm Pre

Hi there - I looked for Music Remix in the App Catalouge and could not find it - perhaps it's discontinued or it's the wrong name ?  thanks in advance for your reply :smileyhappy:

Re: Playlist on Palm Pre

It's not available in the app catalog, as the previous poster mentioned, it is a homebrew application. Check out precentral.net for more information on this and other homebrew apps, however keep in mind these are 3rd party options, and we as technicians will be unable to assist with troubleshooting them.

Hope this helps,

If you don't want to use Homebrew, you can always manually create one. The process is pretty simple considering it's a manual process:

  1. Connect your phone to your computer and choose USB Drive mode
  2. Browse to the folder where your music files are:
Make sure you take a note of the names of all your files!!!!
  3. Now, create a new text file and type in the file names for each song you want in the playlist. Make sure each filename is on it's own line (see the example below).
  4. When you save the file, make sure you save it as a .m3u file and NOT a .txt file.
  5. Safely remove your phone and when you go into your music app you'll now have a playlist.
Gotchas:
  • The name of the file you create will be the name of the playlist on your phone.
  • If the music files are not in the same directory as the .m3u file, then you need to include the path to the music file relative to the .m3u file. See the example below for a clearer explanation.
Example:
You've got the following files and folders in your Music folder on your phone.
Music
 - Metallica
      One.mp3
      Sad But True.mp3
 - Van Halen
      Right Now.mp3

In this example, you have 2 folder in your Music folder: Metallica and Van Halen. Let's put the .m3u file in the Metallica folder since it has the same . So, go to the Metallica folder and create a new text file. Your text file will look like this:
One.mp3
Sad But True.mp3
../Van Halen/Right Now.mp3

Notice that the music files in the same the folder are simply listed. The music files in other folders have a path that is relative to the .m3u file. Think of Relative path as "how do I get to another folder from my current spot." In our example, we have to go from the Metallica folder up to the Music folder, then down to the Van Halen folder. ../ means "go up one folder."

That's the basic jist of it. If you want make it simpler, drag and drop all the songs you want in the playlist into their own folder and then create the .m3u file with just file names.

Looking back at this post, it looks kind of overly complicated. But once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy.

Re: Playlist on Palm Pre

I'm the developer of Music Player (Remix).  It is a homebrew app with many features including on-device playlist creation (called "flylists").  You can get support for the app in my developer forum on PreCentral.net found here:  http://forums.precentral.net/hedami/

You can download the app here:  http://www.precentral.net/homebrew-apps/music-player-remix

And you can learn about homebrew apps (and installation instructions) here:  http://www.precentral.net/how-add-homebrew-apps-patches-and-themes

And keep a look out later this year when the nex-gen version of Music Player (Remix) hits the official app catalog.  Right now the app uses a set of undocumented APIs which Palm has announced will be made public later this year.  When that happens the new version of the app will be submitted to the app catalog.

Re: Playlist on Palm Pre

This worked great and I didn't have to search and install an app, be it free or with price tag, to do it.  Was quick and painless process.

Thanks

Re: Playlist on Palm Pre

Thanks for these instructions.  I followed them, but the music player app on the Pre still does not list the playlist when I open the Playlists view.  The file is named "test playlist 1.m3u" it is located in /music.  My MP3s are in folders /music/U2 and /music/The Clash.  Here are the contents of the playlist file:

U2/All That You Can't Leave Behind/01-Beautiful Day.mp3
The Clash/London Calling/The Clash - London Calling - 02 - Brand New Cadillac.mp3
U2/Achtung Baby/02-Even Better Than The Real Thing.mp3
After moving this file to /music and letting it rescan, I go to Playlists but all it says is "There are no items in this category."
Any idea why it is doing this?  I have also tried sync'ing with Doubletwist, but that does not work, either.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Playlist on Palm Pre

Hi,

Thanks for this. Though it did sound cumbersome to set up a playlist, i personally think it was one of the easiest task. Most helpful. Thanks a ton for helping me out.
