How to connect from TouchPad to desktop localhost?

Hi there,

On my home desktop machine I am running a localhost server (installed with WAMP). From my HP Pavilion laptop I can access that localhost server (in WiFi mode) by typing my desktop IP address: 192.168.1.11

A few weeks ago I managed to access that localhost server from my HP TouchPad (WebOS), but now I no longer can, don't know why.

From my Orange Livebox I can see that the TouchPad is connected, its IP address is 192.168.1.14.

I have the "What is My IP?" app installed on the TouchPad, which tells me about my its IP ADDRESS, and it displays a message "No Network Interfaces". What does this mean? Is it my problem?

Any ideas?

Re: How to connect from TouchPad to desktop localhost?

I'm a little confused.  Is the localhost server a web page server of some sort?  Were you using your TP's web browser to access 192.168.1.xxx (the IP of the localhost server)?

Re: How to connect from TouchPad to desktop localhost?

@speedtouch
Yes, the localhost on my desktop machine is used as a local webserver, and can be accessed from the local machine itself, from a laptop (by wifi) and ... I briefly accessed it from my TP a few weeks ago too, but no longer.

The reason I need this is to conduct some tests on my websites installed locally before putting them on the Web.

Yes, I use my TP web browser to access 192.168.1.11. Now all it says is "Unable to Load Page".

On the other hand, I have no problem accessing the Internet from the TP.
I have also disabled my antivirus firewall in case it might block access, but to no avail.

Re: How to connect from TouchPad to desktop localhost?

Hmm, ok I understand now.  I wonder if there was a change from webOS 3.0.4 to webOS 3.0.5 that is causing this trouble?  You recently updated your TP to 3.0.5, correct?

I'm not aware of any reason why the TP shouldn't be able to connect to the web page on your network.  Have there been any patches or custom software added to the TP through Preware recently?

Re: How to connect from TouchPad to desktop localhost?

@speedtouch: thanks for offering to help.

Here are the results of some more tests.

Now I have set a localhost server running on my desktop (DHCP:192.168.1.10) and another one on my laptop (DHCP:192.168.1.15). My TouchPad's DHCP is 192.168.1.14

The following connections work OK:

  1. connect laptop to localhost on desktop
  2. connect desktop to localhost on laptop
  3. connect TouchPad to localhost on laptop

But the connection I really need does not work:

4. cannot connect TouchPad to localhost on desktop

Weird!

Re: How to connect from TouchPad to desktop localhost?

Ok, so we know that connecting the TP to the localhost on your laptop works.  Great!  So now we need to find out what's different between the laptop local host and the desktop local host.  We know that the TP works when conncted to a localhost.  My guess is there is some configuration error on the desktop OS or the localhost preventing connection by the TP.  I know the laptop connects to the desktop, which is weird.  If the TP can't connect there, why can the laptop?  I don't know the answer.

I asked earlier, but didn't get an answer: are you running any special patches or customized software from Preware?

Re: How to connect from TouchPad to desktop localhost?

Just curious, but what is your goal in connecting to this server? File sharing? Media access?

There are several apps in the catalog that might meet your needs...

Re: How to connect from TouchPad to desktop localhost?

@wyreNut: No, not file sharing or media access.

For some of my online sites I have a local installation on my desktop, where I can test things out before putting them online. And since I acquired the TP I wanted to customize some of the visual themes of those sites so that they display OK on a TP.

So really I want to connect to a website located on a server on my desktop (installed with XAMP), the same way as I would connect to a website on the Internet.
I do not need any special catalog apps for that, I just need to be able to connect to my desktop localhost.

Thanks for helping.

Re: How to connect from TouchPad to desktop localhost?

Still pursuing the problem... Now I've installed wTerm on my TP so I can ping the other machines.

I do get answers when I ping:

  1. from laptop to desktop
  2. from desktop to laptop
  3. from TouchPad to laptop

When I ping my desktop IP on TouchPad I get no answer from the desktop host...

This is not a Firewall issue, I de-activate the firewall when conducting my tests.

I am stuck!
