Initial TouchPad Setup: Device will not power on!

This morning I received my new 32gb WiFi HP TouchPad in the mail. I opened up the contents and than began to charge the device; following the start-up guide. When I plugged in my microUSB charger the center button began flashing (alternating left and right). I then left for class for a couple hours a returned (4+ hours had elapsed). I returned home to find my HP TouchPad with a blank screen and the center button button still flashing as before.

I have attempted simply holding the power button (for over a minute), holding power+center (for over a minute), holding power+repeatedly selecting center, power+volume-up (usb mode), but none of these actions yielded a different result. No low battery indicator, no HP logo, just the same flashing center button. I'm hoping that the device simply doesn't have enough of a charge yet, but with every passing hour I am beginning to think more and more that this is not the issue at large.

Has anyone experienced similar symtoms as myself, and if so, what steps did you take to get your device to boot up the first time? Also just for clarification, should I be attempting the hard-reset with the power still connected? (Which is what I have been attempting)

This troubleshooting process seems quite useless and it's starting to make me anxious. A solution from the community would be much appreciated before I have to go visit my shrink for counseling.

All humor aside, thank you in advance for your feedback.

I have heard of this problem before.  In almost all cases a forced reboot cleared it up.  To force your TP to reboot press and hold the center and power buttons for 10-15 seconds.

Thank you for your response. I have already tried this repeatedly, with no successful results. Should I be attempting this with the power source connected?

Edit:

I have found a solution! (A quite ghetto one at that)

The microUSB cable for my HTC phone is slightly damaged, it easily becomes disconnected and can be jiggled around while connected to the handset. Using this cable, along with the AC adapter provided by HP, I connected the microUSB end to the TouchPad. Using the end of a pair of tweezers, I then propped up the connector so that it would sit flush with the device. About five minutes later, the back-light then turned on and displayed the low battery indicator.

I have attached a photograph in case anyone else experiences this issue in the future. CM9 here I come!

Nice!  Glad you got it going.  So is the TouchPad's USB cable damaged or is the TouchPad's USB port damaged?

It was the microusb that was the culprit. I found another cable in my junk box and my system is now 100% functional. Thank you for the contribution.

Great!  You're welcome.  If you call HP they'll send you a replacement USB cable.  They sent out quite a number of bad USB cables with the TouchPad.
