power - who decided this?

I have a lot of devices with micro-USB sockets and I have chargers around the house and one in my bag for when I go away. Enter the TP. Can it use any of the chargers I have? No, of course jot. It needs its own one.

which HP bozo thought that one up? I'm sorry to be so blunt (and I work for HP too) but that is just stupid. I'd be quite happy for it to take longer to charge but, no, I now have to carry the one charger that I am given around with me. And god help me if I ever mislay  it.

rant over. But if HP are listening or reading this forum, please can I have a firmware update to allow me to charge from a regular USB charger?

It is a shame that normal micro-USB wall plugins cannot charge the TouchPad, but it's because the TouchPad requires more power to charge - more power than a standard wall adapter can provide. It's not ideal, but I've learned to make due.

I've noticed that my TouchPad will "trickle charge" while plugged into a computer. I've used this method to get me by until I can use the wall adapter that came packaged with my TouchPad.

its awful. The plug part is so tall that the weight can pull it out of a verticle socket. Jeez

If the charging transformer is falling out of your wall, then your receptacle appears to be worn out!  (I've been an Electrician for over 25 years.)  New receptacles can be found very cheaply in any hardware store.

Re: power - who decided this?

Poor observation - the Plug is not tall - YOUR WALL-SOCKET needs to be changed. I have not had any problems all over the house with this plug. The round plug design is AWESOME - have you tried twisting the plug cover - did you *know* that existed? - and looking inside. Awesome design. Ofcourse, some people will never be able to appreciate it!

Re: power - who decided this?

Bozo? Shame? Have YOU wondered how much battery capacity/quantity/volume/size, whichever way you wish to imagine, is in the TouchPad device? Have you noticed the amount of consumption of the battery? And the fact that it conveniently lasts around 12 hours without issues. If you are using your TP device for 12 hours and more continuously, then probably YOU have 'issues'. The TP will need a higher current. This is the first iteration of the charger for the device. Give it a few years and it will become dime-sized. For now it is large, AND will only, very slightly, charge the TP through 'some' USB ports of some PCs. This is again because the TP needs a higher Current than what most ports on these devices can supply. AND IT IS THE SAME WITH APPLE'S IPADS, unless connected to a Mac machine. Therefore please accept the design for what you paid for this product and stop calling names to HP!! Doesn't make sense. Return the product or sell it off, someone smarter than you can use the product. Have a nice day!

Yes, profound apologies from me. I was hasty in my judgement.

Re: power - who decided this?

The HP Touchpad appears to use about 700 mA when the screen is on.  This is more than an ordinary PC USB port supplies, and also more than typical cheap chargers supply.  (The charger that came with the Touchpad reportedly supplies 2000 mA, which is 2.0 A.)  However...

Some chargers available on eBay for a couple bucks supply 1000 mA (= 1.0 A).  This is enough to charge the Touchpad, though more slowly.  Here is the one I bought (hyperlink), and it correctly charges the Touchpad without any warning messages.

Again, you must look for a charger specifically advertised as supplying 1000 mA or 1.0 A (or more).

Re: power - who decided this?

One addendum:  The charger had to be plugged directly into a wall socket.  When plugged into a cheap extension cord, it did not satisfy the Touchpad.
