My Palm m515 has lots of data in it but I had unfortunately not hot sync it when I moved on to an iMAc.
Lately the handheld caused some trouble and eventually I can not use the touch screen functions. I have purchased a replacement battery but I am afraid to replace it as I might erase all the data in it my palm.
Did couple of "soft resets" but I cannot get the touch screen to respond. The "buttons" work well.
I have now learnt that I can hotsync the m515 to my imac and just did that successfully. However I am still lost as I can not read the data in my handheld.
I will much appreciate any help and guidance.
Thanks
Zack

Is a piece of dust or something under the screen bezel? Try running a business card underneath the bezel.
Most likely the touchscreen has failed and will need to be replaced.
Since it appears you have successfully synced with the iMac, your data should be safe on the computer.

Hi Akid,
Thanks for your prompt reply.
I went around the bezel with a buss card and try to clean it from any dust etc. It seemed quite clean as the palm had always a cover over the screen. btw when its is on the cradle the charging light is on.
But there is a new development now... The touch screen has completely frozen. Neither the screen nor the buttons respond.
Moreover I had thought the sync was a success but unfortunately I am now in doubt as I cannot see the tel data, memo data or other details I have in the palm. All fields on my desktop ar empty?????????
Before the screen froze I was able to use the tel buttons up and down and scroll and see the data. So I was surprised to note that the tel data on my desktop is empty after the sync.
Can u please give some more guidance and advice as to how at least I can sync and save in it to my desktop?
Thanks in Advance
Zack
nb I bought a replacement battery and am now waiting for a T6 screwdriver. The cheap T5 I bought died on me instantly as its probably not the correct one to use.
But I still have doubts whether I should attempt to change the batery b4 I am certain that all the data in the palm has been sync'ed to my iMac.

Your welcome ![]()
The charging light is normal if it is actually plugged in.
Have you tried a soft reset after the device freezing?
Is Palm Desktop set on another username? (Assuming there is another device in the house)
There is a chance that your m515's age has caught up with it.
If you can get it functioning, (does it respond to the reset button being pressed?) try to get a successful HotSync off ASAP. I still believe the touchscreen is toast though...

Thanks for coming back again.
Yes I did a " soft reset" several times and it still responds to it. After your last message I performed yet another one but again cannot go beyond the "preference" screen where I need to use the touch screen options.
But the buttons respond and I can scroll up and down but cannot opon files as touch screen not responding.
I cannot the "Memos" as well as they can only be accessed thru the touch screen button.
I have tried all user names in the desktop but all data ( including tel numbers which I can scroll up and down) do not show in the desktop.
You're probably right when you say years have caught up with it....................
I will bury my m515 soon but not before I try all attempts to sync or read the data stored especially in the "Memos".
Any more ideas Akid?
Any ways to open files by the help of the buttons?
Any ways to call on the memo files by the help of the buttons?
Thanks Again for your patience and guidance.
Please revert

No problem.
Most likely you will need to replace the touchscreen which will then allow you to access your data as usual. Digitizers can be found at usedpdaparts.com or other online sellers. I've taken apart a couple m500 series devices and the digitizer can be replaced without disconnecting the battery.
Instructions on taking it apart: http://www.directfix.com/category/_M5TAKEAPART.htm
You should still be able to sync properly via the HotSync button on the cradle or cable.
Does your iMac run Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) by any chance?

Do a sync of your data, or if you don't care about it, try doing a Hard Reset. Not working? Get an SD card and connect it to your Mac. Download "PowerDiGi" and see if you can really calibrate your screen. Maybe it's that it isn't callibrated, so try it. If not, ask for a digitizer replacement

Akid,
Thanks for your additional advise and guidance.
My iMac runs on MAC OS X snow leopard (10.5.8). Why?
I think I sync properly as I also get the sync is "complete" message on my palm screen. But still when I try to access the "tel" data on the desktop its blank. But I see that data when the buttons on the palm respond. If this is the case what do u think is wrong? The sync, the battery, the screen?
Anyways thanks for the touchsceen links. I will have now to decide whether the probable recovery of "memo" data in my palm is really worth all the efforts.
I bought this palm in 2001 and had only used it to store various usernames and passwords you accumulate in todays hi-tech world. It sat on its cradle almost all of its "adult" life. It is a pain the a** to re-recover all data from the sources but it is possible.
As I still like the palm m515 I should maybe try a "hard reboot" ,which I never tried b4 for fear of erasing data, replace the battery and see if all comes back to life.
Otherwise, as you said it b4, maybe its age caught with it and its time to lay it to rest.
Sincerely appreciate all your help,
Thank You
Zack

I have replaced the battery and my palm m515 has come back to life. All works fine. Unfortunately, as expected, I have lost all the previously stored data.
There is a problem with hot sync now. When I initiate the hot sync by pressing the button on the cradle I get all the messages that the units are connected etc...both on my palm and iMac screen until "hot sync is complete" message is received.
However the data fail to transfer to the palm and vice versa.
Any suggestions please?

I am on Imac on OSX 10.5.8
I have a Palm m515 have Palm Desktop 4.2.1 installed on the Imac, with Open at Login activated.
Hotsync seems to run well, with no error messages in the log, but on looking at the result, sync'ing does not transfer data in either direction. I amde few entries in my handheld and in my desktop, but neither appear transfered even after receiving 'hotsync operation complete' message on my handheld. Shouldn't a new entry ned be sync'ed, irrespective of where it was entered.
Any suggestions to make this work will be gratefully received!
Thanks,
Zack
