Where are Preferences stored for desktop Catagory colors, Memorized views, Fonts & Templates? All mine are gone after a hotsync hung up saying something about "file busy". I've never seen that message B4. Saw a really long delay during To-do sync. Then all settings were gone. But data synced ok. Does anyone know if that's stored in Saved Preferences.prc? I see it's always saving during a hotsync. However I have no knowlege of what to do with that file from my harddrive backup to get the desktop software to read it again. Or is it another file I need?

1. Open your hard drive.
2. Choose Users then the house icon
3. Choose Documents
4. Click on Palm, select Users
5. Under Users select your user folder (the folder labeled by your username). Open it to check that all info is there.
6. Close the folder and drag the folder labeled by your username to the Mac® desktop.
7. Close hard drive.
8. Uninstall the Palm Desktop and all related information except the User file on the desktop.
9. Reinstall Palm Desktop.
10. Restart Mac.
11. Confirm that the new Palm Desktop will open.
12. Hotsynch the Palm with the Desktop to confirm that it works.
12. If you have multiple Users in the file (typically you will have your own and an archive, but may have more if you have set it up that way) open each by double clicking on the icon. One will not open, and that is the one with damaged data. You will need to trash that one, but can move the other(s) back to the original location. (In my case the archive was working, thank God, as I have many years of notes in it.)
13. If you then have two similar working files (as I then did with an archive file) they can be merged from the Palm Desktop under the File pull-down menu.

By reading your suggestion and the post where it came from, it seems to me a solution for someone who cannot access their user data. If you'll re-read my situation, I can get my stuff.
So uninstalling will do nothing to bring back the settings I have lost. If you are a Palm employee, that great! See where the developers are storing the settings I've lost.
I was guessing it would be in one of the 3 in ~/library/preferences folder on the Mac
(User Data…TF71522 & User Data…TF102147)
But replacing them from backups changed nothing. It's somewhere else. Somehow they save desktop settings that are not needed for the handheld. So would that mean it gets stored on the hardrive only, or is it saved along with the user data in the hotsync process? That would mean I've got to learn how to access that from my docs/palm files off hardrive backup.

I understand you can get to your user folder. The issue is the error you are getting and you need to remove Palm Desktop from your computer and reinstall it back on your Mac. The directions above show you how to do that and that someone while having a slightly different problem but has the same error and resolved it by doing the steps above.
This should re-correct the "settings" as the program as be come corrupted.

I have had a similar problem. I have Palm 4.2.2 running on Mac OS X v. 10.4.9. I have had Zire 22 software and have tried to upload the driver for the Visor Platinum to replace it. I get the "file busy" message also, and have for 2 straight days! How long can it take?
When I follow the steps outlined by the user here, I end up getting the "file busy" message when I click on the user data in step 4 (I can't see the steps at this moment, but I think it was step 4). When I click on the file in my documents, the Palm icon kind of glows, nothing opens, and then I get the "file busy" message.
Any other ideas?

sheronjohn, you're asking this question in a Mac area of the forum - the software is totally different!
I suggest you ask in the Windows HotSync section.

wasisabi,
Have you tried running the Repair Disk Permissions command from the Disk Utility application in the Utilities folder? It could be also that your data is corrupted or that another program is trying to get access to that folder. Have you tried to copy the folder to the Desktop over than drag and drop?

First I'm thinking of playing with backup files, then I'll do the reinstall as you suggest. I am doubting it will recall my PERSONAL desktop settings!
Any idea what is stored in the pref file stored in Palm user path ...Backups/Saved Preferences.prc ?
I can pull an old version of it off my HDD backup. I'm considering dragging onto my "send to handheld" icon.

The Saved Preferences.prc saves all your prefs for your device. If you use an app to manage some of same prefs that app may control that data. If you want to restore an older version of this file you will need to do a hard reset of the device then replace the Saved Preferences.prc file in your backup folder with the one you want.
