This should re-correct the "settings" .
Hello, a long time later I finally gave this a try, IT IS NOT A SOL'N. THE SETTINGS DON'T GET INVOLVED IN AN INSTALLATION. THEY MUST BE IN THE USER DATA FILE!
As I thought, re-installing has NO EFFECT ON YOUR PERSONAL USER SETTINGS like Catagory colors, Memorized views, & Templates.
I went back to previous version B4 4.2.1 Rev D back to version 4.0 since I have that on the factory CD. I can still see the latest background and other personal settings I made in the version 4.2.1 now showing in ver 4.0. But where the heck are the old settings I lost so long ago using 4.0? I THINK IT'S IN THE USER DATA FILE. If you load another data file, the settings instantly change. Does NOBODY know how Palm is saving that stuff on a Macintosh? I think it must be in the Documents/Palm folder along with the data because that's all that was there for the new install to figure out what settings I had last set. All the other ~library and pref files I think I trashed B4 running the installation CD. I could get everything back if someone knows if file merge or what will allow my current data to be added to an old data file which still has the settings.

I still have the data on my Handheld Z22 but I get the file is busy error trying to start the Desktop software. I have the factory CD and tried deleting the Palm desktop, and using clean my Mac to be sure all was gone. Powered down the Mac, and started back up. Installed the desktop software, and still get the file is busy error. There is ALOT of info I don't want to loose in My hand held. What file is busy? I have copied the instructions at the top of this thread, but have not yet been able to try. Is this the same type of problem others are having? It was working, then just failed one day as I tried to enter it. I have Snow Leo Mac OS. HELP! please.

13. If you then have two similar working files (as I then did with an archive file) they can be merged from the Palm Desktop under the File pull-down menu.
Be careful here. I found Merge to create duplicates of every record that already existed. It didn't just add the ones your user file is missing, it adds all the records of other user data. Then you are stuck cleaning up manually.
- sort records in an application by Title
- show column for "modified" date
- if duplicate records, DELETE today's or older one
- if duplicate records remain, delete today's "date" version
