Transitioning Files & all data from a PC Microsoft System to an iMAC.

My aged Microsoft PC , crashed recently and replaced it with an  - APPLE iMAC 21.5 INCH  3.06  GHZ - i3,4G - 500 G , HD 4670  , SUPERDRIVE-

Presently I am using a Palm TX ,purchased 3-4 years ago and use it very successfully , with weekly Sync, via a cradle.

I lost most of my Palm TX  data and files on my PC , have lots of Files and information on my Handheld unit complete.

I do have the TX software Installation CD , listed as applicable also for MAC systems..

I have installed this now on my iMAC , looks somewhat different. Free from any data.

Q-

-I am concerned to loose data from my Handheld , if I now Sync.

- What precautions / settings /advise do I need to secure my information on my Handheld unit and transfer successfully all my information , to my iMAC.

- Can my partner keep using my TX unit on her Microsoft Laptop.

-Can we Sync both on the iMAC  and the Microsoft Laptop with the same TX handheld unit

-What risk is there using both systems .

For any software / hardware requirement this to be available in Australia.

Any Assistance is highly appreciated. Thank you, Downunder702

Re: Transitioning Files & all data from a PC Microsoft System to an iMAC.

To insure you don't lose any data, change the hotsync conduits to handheld overwrites desktop and set as default until you have a succesful sync.

Another option to backup your data is to use a program called nvbackup. This is a program you can download for free, install to an SD card and backup your entire handhekld to the SD card. If you lose data, you can restore from the backup on the SD card. Before hotsync'ing your data to the MAC, you could change the hotsync conduits, except the install conduit, to do nothing and install the program to the handheld. Once on the device, backup to the SD card. If you do not have an SD card for the TX, you will need a standard 2GB SD memory card. Put the card in the TX and format it prior to use.

If you want to sync a handheld to 2 different computers, you would need to make sure you have the couduits set correctly for the type of sync you are doing. For example, you make changes to the data on your PC then want to sync that data to the Mac. You would set the hotsync conduits to desktop overwrites handheld on the PC then sync.  Once the change was made on the TX, go to the MAC, change the conduits to handheld overwrites desktop and then sync. This will update the MAC with the current data on the TX. If you make a change on the handheld, change the conduits to handheld overwrites desktop then sync. to the MAC. Both systems must have the same username in Palm desktop that is on the TX. You can go to hotsync on the TX and look in the upper right corner for the username that is assigned on the TX.

An issue that could occur if you don't maintain the conduit sync direction, is the loss of data or duplication on one of the systems. If you use the NVbackup option, before sync'ing the TX, make a backup.

Once you have the data in Palm desktop you can use the export function to backup your data from Palm desktop.

Click on the following link to the kb.palm.com webpage for the article regarding exporting PD data on a PC.

Use article ID 36278 for MAC.
