Centro and Ubuntu 9.10 Hotsync

Hi all,

I upgrade to 9.10 over the weekend and have an issue with connection to my Palm Centro.

I have been using ubuntu since 8.04 and have been syncing my Palm (using jPilot and Palm Desktop on Windows XP Host (in VBox) regularly. (not without usual initial troubles  .

After the upgrade, I synced it once - the Sync reported error with some voice memo and was completed. My datebook and todo on Palm got updated properly. However after that one instance, now whenever I try connecting my Palm using the USB ... the Palm reboots !! I cant seem to figure out why OS upgrade would in anyway affect this particular USB connection.

My other USB drives work properly (and Palm USB sycn happens on other machines - RHEL and Mac). So, it must be something to do with USB settings on 9.10 I guess.

Anyone else has had this issue ? Any help is appreciated as I need to sync my calendar and todo's on a daily basis.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the hotsync on the device side is corrupted. I normally recommend a hard reset and rename the backup folder. But since you are running Ubuntu, I am unsure if this OS or jPilot backs up settings and programs. If it does I would find this folder and rename it. If it does not hard reset the device and see if the issue continues.

Re: Centro and Ubuntu 9.10 Hotsync

Thanks for the suggestion.

I dont see how hotsync can be corrupted. It works on three other machines for me.

For this particular machine with Ubuntu 9.10 on it, the centro stays in a reboot cycle - it keeps on rebooting itself. I have seen other users facing the same issue - my strong feeling is that it is OS upgrade and some USB driver mismatch for palm thats causing the issue. I was wondering if Palm Inc.  has plans to look into this.  Is there a startup log on the device which I can see and report back - may be we will know where exactly this is breaking !!

I will try rename option and report back.

Re: Centro and Ubuntu 9.10 Hotsync

If you do a system reset(warm reset) to stop the looping restarts on the device then you can enter ##377 on the dial pad of the device. This will tell you what was the last application to crash.

As for us looking into this, Ubuntu is an unsupported OS. Further more we are moving forward with webOS. We will still support the Palm OS, but we will no logger provide updates for the device.

Re: Centro and Ubuntu 9.10 Hotsync

Hi. Thanks for the tip.

1. I tried renaming the backup dir on the PC - no luck. Phone still reboots when connected to the USB.

2. I tried #*377 (since this is GSM phone) and got error which occurred on 12/12/09 while running "security" . Obviously, this is something else since I have synced after this date.

I know Ubuntu is not supported OS but thought there might be a solution to this issue. I am also trying to get answers on Ubuntu forums.

Any more suggestions ?

Re: Centro and Ubuntu 9.10 Hotsync

Is there a way to get the USB driver from the other version OS and seeing if that works? Ummm, that shouldn't matter your using jPilot and the driver is provided by this program. Could it be that your Root USB hubs are corrupted(Microsoft terms sorry)?

Also do you know if jPilot has an update to the new version of Ubuntu? Outside of that I'm drawing a blank on why this would be causing an issue for you.

Oh, your using the same cables on all computers right? I want to see if it could be a cable issue and if you are using different ones that could be why.

You can do a test, try doing a sync after killing the process modem-manager. Worked for me, I was trying to connect to the Internet.

Thanks Radson. It worked for me. I had to actually remove modem-manager but the reboot problem has gone away now.
