HELP! My business future is in your hands. I have been a Palm user for many years and my entire contact, todo, etc... lists are on the 4.0.1 version of the desktop. I just got a new Windows 7 computer and you know the rest...the Palm desktop won't work.
Is there any way possible to get the data from the Palm program into Outlook? Or is there is another program that I could that I could buy that would do it or is there another inexpensive contact manager that would import the .dba files?
Thanking you in advance,
Paul

If you have all your data in Palm desktop, you can use Pocket copy by Chapura to transfer the data.
Check out the program at the following link;

Thank you for your reply, CygnusX1.
But as I look at the Chapura software it doesn't say that it supports Windows 7. Also, I can't load the Palm desktop on my new computer (the one with Windows 7). I do have the Palm files as backup on an external drive hooked up to the new computer however.
Am I missing something or do you see any workaround?
Thanks again!!
Paul

You should be able to at least install Palm desktop on Win7. You may not be able to sync but you could install Palm desktop, import your data then use Pocket Copy to transfer the data.
I see that the requirements do not list Win7 on the Chapura site. You may want to contact Chapura to see if Win7 is compatible with Pocket Copy.
You stated you cannot install your version of Palm Desktop on your Win7 PC. Are you getting any errors when installing? If so, what are they?

I was able to load the 4.1.4 version on my new WIN 7 computer. Would I use the Chapura program to get the data that is on my external drive? When I try to use to use the "import" function from the Palm desktop, it won't get the .dat files.
Thanks,
Paul

The .dat files cannot be imported. You will need to copy and paste those files into the appropriate folders in your username folder on the PC for Palm desktop.
Make sure Palm desktop is closed.
On the c drive, go to program files-palm or palmone. Find your username folder. In that folder you should see an address, datebook, memos, etc. folder. Open the address folder and paste the address.dat file into that folder. Do the same with your .dat files for the other folders. After you have completed the pasting, open Palm desktop and see if your data is there. If it is, you can then use the pocket copy program to move the data to Outlook.
Another option for transferring your data to Outlook is to export the data from Palm desktop in .tab or .csv format then import into Outlook.
Click on the following link to the kb.palm.com webpage for the article regarding exporting data.

Thanks for your help.
Unfortunately, when I follow these directions the files are not in the program. Is there any other way I can get the data from my backup file to the desktop? Could the difference in versions have something to do with it? If there is no way to get the data into the Palm desktop, could there be a way by exporting to excel then by importing from excel to the palm desktop (i'm just reaching)? I'd keep the palm desktop if it were the easier solution rather than going to outlook...
Another option: how about exporting to blackberry and then back in? Again, I'm reaching

The procedure I suggested should work. When you paste the files make sure you are putting them in the correct folders in your username folder and that PD is closed when you paste the files.
The only option with your data files are to use PD. The format is not compatible with any other program.
Yes, it does make a difference what version PD you are using. You should install the same version of PD that you had when you backed up the .dat files. This is especially important if you are using PD. 6.2 and the data files you are reporting, .dat are from an earlier version. PD 6.2 files are in the format of .mdb.dat.
What version PD did you install? Go to help about in PD for the current version you are using.

OK! The files show up in the directory but when I open the palm desktop program itself they are not. Now what?
Thanks,
Paul

You stated you put the files in the directory, what directory? Are they in the subfolder for each component, address, datebook, memos, etc. in your username folder on the C drive in program files?
List all files you have that are backed up. Do you only have the .dat files? There should be several files in each subfolder for the data. You should see an address.dat and an address.bak.
Right click the files and look at the file size. What is the size of each file?
