paidinfull223 - in the future, please stay on the topic of the post when making a reply. Your problem now has gone "off-topic" from the original topic of "Backup..." and should have been a "New Post". Thanks.
The Hard Reset wipes the device clean and reinstalls new copies of all original programs.
It does sound like you have a defective screen. Repairs can be found at usedpdaparts.com or pdaparts.com

Hello Everyone,
Please forgive me if I should have posted this in a new thread, but I feel it pertains directly to this discussion and maybe will help others having this problem.
Is there any way to backup a palm (Tungsten e2) WITHOUT the ability to hotsync?
I'd be happy to backup either to a card or my computer, but when I try to hotsync, I get a "fatal error."
Tried un-installing software, but I can't do a hard reset on the palm without losing all my data, and I can't get any backup software on my card without the ability to hotsync
Also Windows doesn't seem to be recognizing the Palm as a USB device--doesn't show up in device manager when plugged in, although it DOES charge, which seems strange. Figured the best way to fix would be a hard reset.
If anyone has any advice on backing this device up OR perhaps just getting it to hotsync (which is off topic) it would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks so much,

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
If you mean can you backup your handheld to your desktop without Hotsync, the short answer is no.
But you can certainly backup your E2 to a SD card using NVBackup, even without the ability to Hotsync the application to your Palm. You have to get the NVBackup.prc file onto a SD card, and the best way to do that is with a USB card reader. Drop the NVBackup.prc from your desktop into the /DCIM/Palm/Launcher folder on the card. (These folders are created automatically when you Format the card in the E2 using the Card Info application.) Then the application will appear in the App Launcher (Home) screen's drop-down category list. You can also then Copy the application from the card to the Palm's memory.
The rest of your question probably belongs more in the Windows Hotsync board. I would start a new thread there and detail your issue a little further, such as:

Thank you so much! So if I understand correctly, I can drop the app onto the card using Windows explorer and a card reader, pop the formatted card back in the palm, put the program on the palm, and then it will be able to back up the whole device to the card? If so, that is great news, because I could then do a hard reset on the palm without fear of losing all my data, and figure out a way to fix the hotsync.
Just let me know if I am understanding correctly and thanks again!

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
Googoing NVBackup will produce numerous places where you can find it, including here.
Your Treo 680 has an expansion card slot. It is behind a little door on the right side of the phone. Check your Users Guide if you need more help finding it.
