Hello - a friend gave me a Palm Pilot Professional (US Robotics) and I want to re-sell it. I have put in new batteries and when I turn it on all that I get is "Tap center of target". Does this mean that it is working? I am unable to attach it to my computer because I don't have the correct receptacle for the plug in part. I have the docking station, the manual and a CD that goes with it. I don't want to list it until I am sure that it works. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks.
Post relates to: Palm Pilot

This is part of the setup process to calibrate the touchscreen. Tap the targets and continue with the setup. Once setup, you will need to install Palm Desktop from the CD. Connect the cradle during installation and see if it will hotsync. If it hotsync's then the HH is working. After you verify the HH will complete setup and hotsync, you will need to hard reset the HH before selling in order to put the HH back to factory settings and erase your username.

There are links on the page to the user guide, troubleshooting, how to's, downloads, etc.
The hard reset will erase all data on the device.

Cygnus - thank you so much for such a detailed reply. I have no way to do what you suggested since I don't have a way to connect the Palm Pilot Professional to my computer but I will save your info and pass it along to who ever buys the device. So do you think then that it is working since the "tap center of target" message appears?

You will need to complete the setup process to see if the HH functions normally. I would suggest you tap the targets and continue on. Once you have the "home" screen, use the HH and see if it functions normally. I provided the link to the userguide so you can try the functions on the HH to verify normal operation. If it was me, I would make sure all functions work before selling. You don't want any bad feedback regarding an item that does not work properly.
You said you have the cradle, does it not have a cable attached to it?
You can find the cables on the internet and probably on eBay.

Thanks - I looked in the manual and ended up doing a soft reset which brought the screen to life. I do have the cable for the cradle but my laptop doens't have a slot that will accept it. Now that I got the screen working I feel comfortable selling it since it does turn on and come to life. Thanks again for your feedback - it worked!

Ok, cool. Glad I could assist.
Your cable is probably a DB9 pin serial connector. Those DB9 ports have been removed on newer PC's due to USB taking it's place. With USB you don't have 2 different form factors for the connectors like RS 232 serial protocol, which was typically 9 and 25 pin configurations.
You can find 9 pin to USB adapters on the internet that would probably work or a USB cradle that is compatible with the Pilot. You may want to pass on that info. to the buyer.
