The Notorious Palm Centro Headphone Jack

Thank you one and all for the suggestions of how to fix the headphone jack (toothpick, wd-40, jiggling, compressed air). However, this is my THIRD Palm Centro in one year and it has, alas, succombed like each and every one before it to a "confused" jack. Can anyone suggest where to purchase a headphone jack for the Centro (or perhaps know what qualities it posesses so I can know what to look for in another) as well as any info needed to remove and then resolder a new one in place? Let's assume I have a soldering gun and a modicum of intelligence, and my warranty has already been voided... THANK YOU!!!

Here is instructions that might help you. http://www.gethightech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=RD. Please be advised that if you do take the device apart we can no longer support that device for repairs/replacement. Tech support should be no problem. As for parts you may want to look at eBay for devices that have stopped functioning completely or people are selling for parts.

Re: The Notorious Palm Centro Headphone Jack

Hi Rachel,

Are you sure that the "jack" is defective?  I ask this question because I thought that the jack of my 700P did not work.  I had the same issue with my current 755P.

I discovered (with the help of others) that the phone jack on these phones is proprietary.  PALM may dispute this, but I could find no headset that would work.  The VERIZON company store with a repair center told me these jacks never work.  (What an uninformed reply.)

Ultimately I bought a headset from the PALM store.  It doubles both as a stereo headset and a phone headset with an answering switch.  The black "bands" on the PALM "plug" don't match up to a third-party jack.  It is actually a great headset for sound and is comfortable and inexpensive.

Regards,

DMac

Re: The Notorious Palm Centro Headphone Jack

Ahh, I feared this was possible. WHY Palm wouldn't own up to needing Palm specific peripherals is beyond me, but I will give it a try before soldering on the new part. I bought a teensy tinesy part and its parts to be soldered are miniscule. And although the phone is technically junk, I don't want to ruin it if there is hope...Thank you!

Re: The Notorious Palm Centro Headphone Jack

I am new to Palm's but I have already had to do so many things to this thing manually that it just blows my mind. I love it but I kind of miss normal phones. Anyways, I most definately have a headphone jack issue, although I have never used the port at all. I have been putting my stylus in there to reset it but it is happening 1-3 times a day now. Could I possibly take out the headphone jack or replace it? Please respond. I need help BAD!

Hello Gigifer, Welcome to the Palm Support Community.

If you're poking around in your Centro's headphone jack several times a day, it sounds like it's in bad shape!  Have you tried using any WD-40 on the male plug from headphones to lube the switch?

I've recently read of some limited success with an old freeware program called "Head Cold".  Feel free to try it:

I wonder if it's possible to replace with a 3.5mm plug instead :smileyhappy:
