I've had a variety of Palm devices but haven't had this problem before. I bought this Zire 21 on eBay a year ago but didn't actually start using it until last month when my Zire 22 became unreliable. The touch screen doesn't respond at all. When I power it up it is at the alert page. I can't delete any alerts, can't go to calendar with the button or using touch screen. Thanks for any help.

Have you tried calibrating the digitizer? Prefs/Touchscreen. (I'm assuming you can still navigate using the 4-way pad).
Is there any grit or dirt caught between the screen and the plastic frame around it? Run a slice of business card around the edges and see if something is caught, causing a phantom press.
Tried doing a Soft Reset yet?

Thanks, I'll check for any grit. I have done a soft reset. I can't navigate off of the alert screen. The buttons do allow up and down on the alert screen but no left or right function.

WyreNut - no noticeable grit between screen and plastic frame. I did another soft reset and I can get to calendar or phone book and then use the navigation pad but it will not navigate to other areas such as preferences. Any thoughts of doing a hard reset and it restoring the function of the touch screen?

It sounds like a Hardware issue to me, but if you have the data safely backed up via HotSync, then feel free to try a Hard Reset.
Be advised though, if it's a hardware issue, even a Hard Reset will not fix it.
