New Install / Upgrade at same time - Palm TX

I am doing a reinstallation of an XP system and at the same time transfering from a Palm IIIxe w/Desktop 4.1 to a Palm TX with Desktop 4.2.  Just to make sure, is the following procedure correct to preserve my existing settings and data:

- Copy ONLY the user's data directory "\palm-install-directory\user-name-directory" from the old disk to the new disk and put it in the directory where I plan to install the new Palm Desktop 4.2.

- Remove or rename the following directories from the user-name-directory in order to avoid copying incompatible software from the IIIxe to the TX:

     --   "\user-name-directory\archive"

     --   "\user-name-directory\backup"

     --   "\user-name-directory\[any add-on program data file directories]"

- Install the new Palm Desktop software.

- Sync the new TX with the new software installation.

Note: this assumes, as is true in my case, that I have no data I wish to keep from add-on programs that were on the IIIxe.

Thanks,

Re: New Install / Upgrade at same time - Palm TX

You would want to rename the backup folder to backup.old then migrate the data. The backup folder retains the settings from the previous device. If you are upgrading to a newer model, the backup folder contents will conflict with the new device configuration. You will start to have odd behavior on the new HH because of the differences.

Here is a link to an upgrade guide for Palm OS HH's.

The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each component in Palm Desktop to a separate folder on your PC.

Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.

Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.

With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.

Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.

With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.
