Hey there,
I'm hoping this will be a simple fix but I haven't been able to figure it out thus far.
I have a Tungsten C and am changing laptops for an XP to a Vista machine. My data is backed up.
I downloaded Palm Desktop by ACCESS 6.2.2 and installed it. Everything seemed to go fine and I like the new functionality (new to me at least) in the Hotsync app. I added my User Name in the appropriate place, making sure it matched what I'd used on my old laptop.
I synced with my computer and it took about ten minutes and it seemed to be synching everything. I opened my desktop app, entered the password, and was surprised that there was no data there.
I closed it out and gave the application administrator permissions (I recall that was an issue on another system a friend was using). That didn't help.
I can see that there's a folder in my Documents folder that contains my data but for some reason,my desktop app just isn't seeing it.
My Desktop app shows the correct user name but there's no data. I added a test sample to the desktop app and performed a sync. The memo wasn't copied to the Tungsten C.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Is your version of Vista 32bit or 64bit? If it is 64 bit you can only sync via bluetooth.
When you say the data is backed up, how did you back it up?
On the handheld, in hotsync, is there a name in the upper right corner? This should be the same username you are sync'ing to in Palm desktop.
For reference purposes, click on the following link for the support page for your device on the kb.palm.com webpage.

There are links on the page to the user guide, troubleshooting, how to's, downloads, etc.

Hi,
Thanks for your response.
I have a backup of my data and the working desktop application on my XP machine. The new Vista system is 32-bit and I have the palm cradle attached via USB.
Since I posted this message yesterday, I tried uninstalling the Palm Desktop and reinstalled Desktop 4.1.4.
I started the sync utility on the Palm and the hotsync popup comes on my laptop screen. The two seem to be synchronizing data. I open my Desktop app and there's no data. The Username is the same on my new system's Desktop app as it is on my XP's Desktop app and on the Palm hotsync window.
I tried adding data into the Desktop app and syncing. The new data wasn't added to the Palm.
I manually replaced the Desktop app's data files with those from my backups. The right data now shows up in my Desktop app. Unfortunately, changes to either my Palm or Desktop app files aren't synchronized when I sync. I checked the Desktop custom settings and they are set to synchronize.
It seems like the hotsync utility is syncing between my Palm and my laptop but the Desktop app isn't using that data. I did a search on my laptop for Palm-specific files and found that the files from my Palm are being backed up to my Vista user account under AppData>>Local>>VirtualStore>>Program Files>>palmone>>myusername
I've upgraded systems and had to transfer my Palms several times over the year but this one has been the most problematic. I tried the link but haven't found anything new.
Any suggestions?

When you backed up your data, did you export the data from Palm desktop using the file export command and then import into the new Palm desktop on the Vista PC? You did not state how you backed up the data. Are you copying the username folder and pasting it into the Palm folder on the Vista PC. You will need to use the export-import functions in Palm desktop to transfer the data.
Is the hotsync name on your handheld the same as in Palm desktop? I didn't see that answer in your post.
When you use control panel to remove Palm desktop, it leaves files and registry entries behind that will corrupt a new install of Palm desktop.
You need to do a "clean" uninstall of Palm desktop on the Vista PC. After the "clean" uninstall, use the CD that you got with the handheld and re-install Pam desktop.
Here are the "clean" uninstall instructions for Vista.
You should first make a copy of your data to have just in case something
happens. You can find your data files by going to Start --> Documents -->
Palm OS Desktop. Highlight your Palm Desktop username and right click and
copy. Then go to your PC desktop right click on a blank spot and select paste.
Now you want to uninstall Palm Desktop and remove everything that has to do
with Palm Desktop from your computer.
Go to the following locations on the PC and delete the folders listed below.
C:\Program Files\Palm or Palm One
C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm or
PalmOne
C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata (If you don't see Palm or Palmone in the appdata folder then don't delete appdata. Only delete the Palm or Palmone folder.)
*Note you may need to view hidden folders to get to appdata. To do that go
into your control panel and open folder options. Go to view tab and uncheck
hide hidden files.
Once this is done you will need to delete some registry keys from your PC Operating System.
Word of warning, going here and deleting the wrong thing can cause your PC
from starting up, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel
you are unsure of yourself, see if you have a friend that can help you or a
PC technician that you can pay to help you. This procedure will show them everything they need to delete. To make sure we have a good copy of the current registry, we need to do a backup of the Registry.
Go to start on the PC, in the search field type "regedit.exe" without quotes.
Highlight COMPUTER, go to File --> Export. Should pop up with a Save As box.
Current location is fine, should be in My Documents or save to a location you will remember. In the file name on the bottom type "backup[todaysdate]" i.e. backup07072008. Next, the hard part.
The easiest way to make sure your working with the correct key, highlight the key i.e. palm quick install, and press delete on your keyboard. It will ask you, are you sure. Say yes. Do the same thing for all keys below.
If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician.
BUT do not turn off your computer.
The reg keys are as follows (Note: some of theses reg keys will not be here
but if they are delete them)
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm, Inc.
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmDesktopAutorun
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\palmOne
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmSource
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource or anything else that says palm
Next reboot your computer.
Then reinstall your palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. If it asks
you for a username and you synced your device before, put in 'test" if you
did not sync before create a hotsync name or use the existing name that is identified on the handheld.

Hello. I'm following your directions for uninstalling Palm. (currently using Palm desktop 4.1 for Sony Clie). I want to upgrade to a Treo 700P phone and new Palm desktop. Have vista 32bit machine.
In your instructions here, you say to delete these items:
C:\Program Files\Palm or Palm One
C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm or
PalmOne
C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata
When I get to this point, do I want to delete the entire appdata folder? It has "\local\" - then a bunch of things that I would assume I'm not supposed to delete? Or are these items taken care of somewhere else?

If you don't see Palm or Palmone in the appdata folder then don't delete appdata. Only delete the Palm or Palmone folder.
If you are upgrading to a new version of Palm desktop, you do not need to clean uninstall unless you have problems sync'ing.
You can install the version of Palm Desktop that comes with the Treo 700P over the existing install of Palm desktop.

Do you have user account control enabled when you are installing Palm desktop?
Lets try the next steps to see if we can resolve the issue.
You will need to clean uninstall Palm desktop then disable user account control in contol panel-users.
Reboot the PC. Make sure user acount control is disabled. Make sure you have full admin rights on the PC.
Install Palm desktop 4.1.4 instead of 6.2. When you install Palm desktop, right click and run as administrator.
6.2 does not list your device as being compatible.
After the re-install, try and sync with the data that is on the handheld and set the conduits to handheld overwrites desktop. See if the data sync'ed to Palm desktop
