Tungsten E installation

I replaced my Tungsten E with a Tungsten E2, when the battery started to fade on the old E.

I have Windows XP home, Palm Desktop 4.1.4 installed.  It used to work fine with the old E. It works fine with the E2.  My daughter has a use for the old dog, so I am prepared to replace the battery, that only lasts for an hour or two at best before dying.  I charged the battery, ran through set up after the battery was fully charged.  I hooked it to the USB port, set the desktop to the old user name and tried to hot sync the device.  Up popped a message that said that the driver for the device (a very long series of letters and numbers) could not be installed.  Then the "New Device Found" window popped up and told me that I needed to use the CD that came with the device -- long lost, since I replaced the E with the E2.

Is there anyway to get the Tungsten drivers to install, without a CD?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Tungsten E installation

From your description it sounds like you may be syncing both devices to the same ID. Doing that is likely to cause problems. You should Hard Reset the old E, then try syncing and creating a new ID for it when prompted. Hard resetting will delete everything from it...data and applications.

Also, the E2 should be syncing either with PD 4.2 which comes on its installation disc, or 4.1.4e. The "e" at the end of 1.4.1 stands for "extended" which refers to additional fields in the Contacts database which exist on the E2 but not the E. The old E can also sync with either of these versions.

Re: Tungsten E installation

Thanks for the response. Each unit has a different ID.
I had a hard reset on the old one had a hard reset because the battery was completely dead. I will verify that it has the proper owner name to see if that helps. Can both the e and non-e suffix be run on the same computer, or do each of the setups use common files stored in the same place?
Thanks.

Re: Tungsten E installation

You can only have one installation of Palm Desktop on your PC. The user files for each user are kept in their own sub-folders. This allows multiple handhelds to sync with the same desktop. The Palm Desktop should be selected for best compatibility with the newest device, which is the E2 in your case.

Re: Tungsten E installation

I thought as much. Is there any way of determining the ID is of the old one, since it will not allow me to sync without the installation from the CD? The Palm Desktop that I have has both IDs in the selectable user fields (upper right hand corner).
