re-install PalmOne Desktop v. 4.1.4?

Help! My (very old) Zire 31 has worked very well with PalmOne Desktop v 4.1.4 until now. Will no longer HotSync.

It does not seem to be the PDA, so I suspect a desktop file is corrupted.

My PDA battery has completely discharged, so all its user data has been lost. My Desktop has 10 years' worth of dates and addresses I would hate to lose.

If I re-install 4.1.4, will my user data be preserved? Or should I install an update?

Thanks in advance. Sure could use some adult supervision.

Ross

Re: re-install PalmOne Desktop v. 4.1.4?

When Palm Desktop is uninstalled in the "normal" fashion via the Control Panel's  Add/Remove programs routine, it is designed to not wipe out any user data that exists.

However,  I would highly recommend you copy the user folder that is on your computer to another location before doing so!  It's the folder with the abbreviated version of you HotSync account name.  Copy it to a flash drive, or your desktop for example, then reinstall Palm Desktop.

Cheap insurance should anything go wrong...

Re: re-installing Palm Desktop v. 4.1.4

hello, and happy post-thanksgiving!

my computer is a lenovo x201 thinkpad laptop loaded with windows xp pro, sp 3, with all updates through today [nov. 26, 2011].

a week or so ago, i installed palm t/x handheld software v. 4.1.4 from my original palm software installation cd. all went well up to the point of pressing the hotsync button on my handheld. when i did. and instructed me to do a hard reset, which, as you know, wipes out all my data.

so, should i delete my palm installation from my laptop [including the registry, for which i'd need some advice] and reinstall it from the cd. alternatively, should i download palm 6.xxx and install that over my existing 4.1 software. the bottom line is to retain all of my data. finally, if i shift to windows 7 in the future, will palm 6.x function with win 7 just as it does with xp?>

for background, i have had the same software for several years on my dell dimension desktop, hot sync it regularly, and it works very well. but for biz consulting and writing reasons, i need to have it functioning on my laptop.

i hope i haven't rambled too much. you've provided a lot of useful information in this forum, and i would appreciate your advice on dealing with what i had thought would be a simple problem.

thanks very much.

Re: re-installing Palm Desktop v. 4.1.4

[ Edited ]

Campus56, two things -

First off, the PalmTX installation disk came with Palm Desktop version 4.2, not 4.1.4.  That sounds like the one supplied with your T|E...  4.2 is available from my "Reading the Manual..." link below.

Secondly, to insure no loss of data, copy your HotSync user data from your present installation on your computer (C:/Program Files/Palm/ <hotsync account name truncated> ), and save it in another place - either in a totally different directory on your computer, or on a "thumb drive".  This way, it will be safe no matter what happens in any uninstall/reinstall.

I'm not completely understanding your question.  Did you wipe out the data on the TX or not?  Some programs will cause a simple "Reset" to be required, but none that I know of will ask you to do a "Hard Reset"!!!  A normal Soft Reset just reboots the device, which is sometimes necessary depending on the software installed.  I recall most SkyScape medical programs forced a reset after installation...

Palm Desktop 4.2 will work fine in Win7 with the addition of the Aceeca 64bit drivers now available.  See the Windows HotSync section of this forum for information about 64bit drivers.

Thanks for the compliment!  :smileyhappy:
