Palm Pre Profile Contacts Export

[ Edited ]

HOW?! I've looked everywhere and have yet to find the solution for this. I'm trying to move my contacts from my palm pre profile into my gmail contacts. (too many to move manually)

I've tried setting gmail as the default profile and see if that would synch/move them, but that did not work.

I've tried chapura but that did not work. It does not move/synch "palm pre profile" contacts to the pocketmirror or echo profile. And companionlink software would not work either based on their diagram and description of how it works (it syncs with gmail profile not pre profile).

Is there a way to export those contacts or somehow change the contact profile they appear under?

Re: Palm Pre Profile Contacts Export

Once the contact has been associated to a source (e.g. palm profile, eas, google) it can't be moved. The only method of moving it to your Google account is manually or if the data is elsewhere (e.g. palm desktop) then start over and sync it to Google.

Re: Palm Pre Profile Contacts Export

Can you expand on this further?  I did the same thing, I transferred everything from my 680 to my Pre without setting up a Google account first.  I now realize I would like to have had the Google account first as I want to be able to modify things other than on my Pre.

So, if once something is associated with the Palm Profile, and it can not be moved, what are the options?  You have mentioned moving them manually.  How does one do this?  You also mentioned redoing things.  How do I delete everything from my Pre (contacts, calendar, etc) and the Palm Profile (is that necessary?) so I can report?

Sorry for hijacking this thread; any help would be greatly appreciated.

Palm desktop is gone and so is the original phone and there is over 300 contact so too many to do it manually.

Re: Palm Pre Profile Contacts Export

Okay, I did a bunch of reading last night in the manual and I solved my problem though this isn't going to solve biocoder's problem (this may help someone else if they do a search).  Basically, if you still have access to your data before you transferred and you are willing to go back, here are the steps:

1.  (Optional) Make a list of all the programs you've downloaded, information you've entered, changes you made since you imported the data to the Pre

2.  Go to Backup (it defaults to the third launcher screen)

3.  Turn it off with the toggle on the top right and select "Turn Off and Erase Data" - this removes all the data from the Palm Backup Profile

4.  Now, go to Device Info and perform a Partial Erase, this will remove all the data except for the pictures and such.

5.  The phone will now reboot and you'll have to enter in your Palm Profile again.

6.  Rerun the data assistant or however you transferred your contacts and now select Google/Other

Just did it right now and it appears to have worked for me.

Re: Palm Pre Profile Contacts Export

To start over you will need to turn off backup on your device. Then do a partial erase. After 30 minutes sign back into your Palm profile. Set up your google account and run the DTA again.

If you want to move them over manually you will need to delete the original contact and recreate it making sure to set Google as the location.

Re: Palm Pre Profile Contacts Export

wow seriously???  Ive been trying to figure this out for weeks :smileysad:    It's way to freaking complicated to erase 200 some contacts and have to essentially re-enter then 1 by 1 so i can now sync to my google instead of palm

i swear i really hate my PRE more and more everyday - so frustrating

Re: Palm Pre Profile Contacts Export

I'm in the same (leaky!) boat  - I'm trying to do a one time push from Palm Destop with DTA to the Pre / Google Contacts and then have an ongoing synch with Google Contacts.

All the contact info is getting to my Pre but the push to Google contacts prematurely quits after 34 contacts make it to the Google 'My Contacts' folder. They all have last names starting with 'A' although they appear to be sorting by first name so "Bob Allison" is before "Cathy Aaron".

Other Clues:

The Palm site flow says to set-up the google account before doing the DTA - when I set up the Google contacts account, it appears to be doing a one way sync on both contacts and calendar items from Google to the Pre - I'm wondering if that could be fouling up the later push from the Pre to Google contacts?

Ongoing contact sync only working from Google to the Pre, not Pre to Google . . . but  ... ongoing calendar synch is working both ways.

Also, even though I deleted back-up data and did a device reset and changed the sign-on on my Pre log-in account and created a new palm profile when I started the pre up, it still seemed to know that the Sprint store had originally done a contact sync (unfortunately, that synch didn't bring the snail mail addresses with it - I think they had the 'home address' and 'work address' fields crossed and all my snail mail address info is in "home address".)

I've fine with deleting all Google contacts before I reboot to avoid dupes, all my important contact info on the Palm Desktop.

Goal:

I want to figure this out without manually bringing the contacts into Google contacts via .csv because I've got 1600 contacts and the palm desktop export doesn't tell me if the phone is mobile or work or home or if the field is an email, phone etc so I can't figure it out unless I eyeball each one and manually sort them on the .csv file - a 5 hour job -- but even if I do that, it's useless if I can't figure out how to get the ongoing contact synch working in both directions.

I have been through palm support (chat and phone) and am waiting for an expert to contact me but not sure when / if that will happen.

Thanks for any ideas here.

Re: Palm Pre Profile Contacts Export

I am not familiar with what the palm desktop csv file looks like, but maybe you could open up the file and modify it so that it has a "proper" file header. More or less ike MS is suggesting to do here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810930. I don't know how many columns/fields the csv file has, but add column/field names that make sense. As for the phone numbers, I would add the word "Phone" to the field name like so, "Home Phone", "Work Phone", etc. You can also add other field names if you know for a fact that all your contacts have the same type of data in it, like "spouse", "children", or whatever. One thing I would do is make sure that after you edit the file with excel, you do a "save as" Windows CSV and give the file another name. (I found that other csv exports applications were not formatting the file correctly and I could not get it imported to google contacts.) Then use the newly created csv file to import into google contacts.

As for my situation, I finally got my contacts exported from the Palm Pre by having to access Linux OS on the phone, copying the PalmDatabase file from the phone to my desktop, querying the database file using SQLite and using it to export the contacts to a csv file that i then manipulated and used to import into Google. It was not fun.

Re: Palm Pre Profile Contacts Export

Issue solved the 3rd party way: Companion Link

I think that the reason my Palm Desktop push to Google Contacts stalled at the 34th contact and would only do a one way sync after that  was because there was an "unrecognized character" in the Palm Desktop contact file, probably right around record #35.

Rather than go through my entire contact database and hunt down which records had issues, I broke down and gave Companion LInk a try.  It worked, so if my hypothesis is correct, it recognizes more characters than the Pre sync.

Thanks to all the posters on this one, glad to have it behind me.
