My contacts are on Outlook, and transfer to my Google account (Using Companionsync). It is too bad you lost them, but I think you ought to get a Google account if you don't have one and save them there, so they are always available no matter what happens to your phone.
I am not sure exactly how the backup works, except I do know if you turn it off, it erases your profile on the Palm server

Did your contacts originally come from your PC? Before Palm Pre, I mean.
If so, at least the ones from the PC can be resent in a controlled way which doesn't use the Palm Profile. We recently released CL USB Sync app (on Pre look in the App Catalog). This is a two-way backup via USB cable to your PC. On the Pre/Pixi, your data is stored in a separate profile from the Palm Profile, and as long as you have synchronized lately, all data can easily be restored from the PC. You can check it out for free (14 days) at http://www.companionlink.com/usbsync. Total cost is $39.95 and includes lifetime free telephone and email technical support.

So people have to spend 39.95 to get a local backup using this vendor software.
Stupid, we should not need to pay some overpriced fee to insure our data is safe. Palm needs to provide this or be accountable for insuring data saved on the cloud is safe.
Palm not providing a way to save data tells me that they own the backup issue.
