Palm Desktop 4.1.4 on Windows 7 64-bit

Does PD 4.1.4 HAVE to be installed in XP Virtual mode or will it run without using the virtual mode?

Virtual mode Is not needed at all when you use the aceeca drivers. Please visit the Windows Hotsync section of this forum for information on syncing with 64bit systems. Wyrenut

Re: Palm Desktop 4.1.4 on Windows 7 64-bit

been there done that

Reb1 was helping me for a while but I haven't heard from him for a couple days. I clean up all traces of 4.1.4, reinstall 4.1.4, reinstall aceeca driver, and ensure hotsync is set to local usb.

Then I'm confused about the exact order of the next steps.

If I hotsync, it asks me if I want to create a new user. I say yes, I put in my handheld password when prompted, then it syncs for a while and indicates success. I launch PD and the user list is empty. I say "new" and it tells me "Brad Holcomb" is an illegal name so apparently the dat files ended up somewhere else than PD expects them.

If I launch PD before hotsync it throws an error as well.

I will (again) do a clean uninstall of PD if someone will please tell me the STEP-BY-STEP, CLICK-BY-CLICK order of things, please?

like:

install palm desktop 4.1.4 and accept defaults

(re)install aceeca 64-bit usb driver

then?

this is what I have:

windows 7 64-bit enterprise with admin-privilege user account

palm m515 with usb cradle/cable

does it matter that active directory is implemented on my maching? (work computer)

I really rely on my palm and I do much more entering/editing of data on my confuser, then sync to my palm mostly as a reference when I am away from the office, but I do keep my whole life on this device!

please help?

I read elsewhere that I should turn off antivirus and firewall before installing 4.1.4. Do you recommend that? Is that my problem?

Have you tried turning off User Account Control in the Control Panel (in the "Users" app) and/or right-clicking on the Palm Desktop icon on your computer, then selecting "Run as Administrator"?

You have the steps correct - install Palm Desktop, install Aceeca driver, reboot the computer, run a hotsync (be sure the Hotsync Manager icon is displayed in the computer's tool tray).

Success!

As I went through the uninstall/reinstall process, I wrote down every single thing that I did to "prove" (admittedly)  that I have been following the prescribed steps but still ended up in a fail. Amazingly enough, I had a successful sync and the palm desktop contains all of my data. As I look over this full page of notes I do not see where I went wrong previously but I'm not going to spend the time to figure it out. Let sleeping dogs lie?

This time, I did turn off UAC and ran both hotsync manager and PD "as administrator". I'll have to try reverting the UAC and launching the apps normally and see if I get the same results.

Thanks for spending the time!

returned UAC to previous setting and launched apps normally; everything still works!

HOW TO INSTALL PALM DESKTOP 4.1.4 ON WINDOWS 7 64 BIT WITH ACEECA 64-BIT USB DRIVER AND PALM M515 HANDHELD THAT HAS DATA

just in case it might help someone who has gone round-n-round with this, this is what finally worked for me:

set UAC to "never notify"

exit hotsync resident in taskbar

uninstall palm desktop 4.1.4

delete all "palm*" folders as specified in "clean uninstall" instructions (I had none)

remove all registry entries as noted in "clean uninstall" instructions (I had 2)

download aceeca 64-bit usb driver, extract/unzip into a handy location

REBOOT

download and right-click run palmdesktopwin414en.exe "as administrator"

accept software license agreement

accept default install location of c:\program files (x86)\palmOne\

put m515 in cradle and plug cable into usb port

open device manager

power on handheld

press sync button so computer "sees" the device trying to communicate

if computer says it installed driver successfully, don't believe it

if computer starts sync and/or asks "create new user?", cancel it

your handheld may say "connection could not be established"; cancel out of that state

update driver for the palm device that appeared in device manager with aceeca 64-bit usb driver

REBOOT

exit hotsync from taskbar

start > all programs > palm desktop > hotsync manager, right click and run "as administrator"

ensure hotsync in taskbar is set to "local usb"

ensure handheld is powered on

press hotsync button

create a new account on this pc? OK

enter password for handheld if it asks

it will (hopefully) sync to your correct handheld user name; might take a few minutes

sync may generate messages; hopefully nothing serious

launch palm desktop "as administrator"

hopefully you will see all your data got synced to the palm desktop

return UAC to it's original setting

REBOOT one more time

launch palm desktop normally; hopefully it still looks the same with all your data

add something to your handheld; add something different to the palm desktop

hit the sync button

hopefully both new items got synced to the opposite side

I'm still not sure what did the trick for me. I swear I have tried all these thing AT LEAST 5 times but maybe never tried them all in this sequence.

Good luck!

Re: Palm Desktop 4.1.4 on Windows 7 64-bit

I was successfully sync-ing with Outlook using a cable in the XP Virtual machine mode when I got a message that Outlook was not registered.  Working with my company's product manager for Outlook has led to the impass that I can't use XP mode to access Outlook.

Do I need Outlook running to Hot Sync with it? Before the conversion to Windows 7, I bought Pocket Mirror to sync with Outlook 2010. Does anyone know if that is sufficient?  Should I ask the people who make Pocket Mirror or just try?
