USB Hotsync needs 32-bit hardware or software? or both?

I made the mistake of buying a new computer without knowing I needed 32-bit to do a USB Hotsync.  My new computer is 64-bit hardware. However, I got a 3-year service package from HP and they've offered to send me a 32-bit Windows XP OS installation disk if I want it. They said it will work, you can install a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit computer.

Their question is, and my question for you is, do I need a 32-bit HARDWARE to do the USB sync, or will the 32-bit OPERATING SYSTEM (software) on a 64-bit computer do the trick? Does anyone know? Palm wouldn't tell me ("unsupported device"), and I can't find it anywhere.

I want to avoid doing the bluetooth thing if possible, since reading that people have problems syncing docs-to-go with bluetooth and I don't want to have to buy a bluetooth device and have to try to figure out which one will work with my particular set up. I'm pretty addicted to docs-to-go.

BTW I have a Zire 72 that I can't live without (poor memory/organizational skills) and my new computer is an HP EliteBook 8440p currently running 64-bit Windows 7.

I'd rather avoid installing a new OS (and reinstalling everything else) if it's not going to help.

Thanks to anyone who has an idea, suggestion, or experience to share.
