Palm Pre PROBLEMS!

This is my second palm pre I have had.  I returned the first unit just three days after I got it because the screen was so loose it was making a clicking sound when I put it in my pocket. (That was a huge ordeal and Sprint knows how pis*ed I was!)

This is a new phone and I've had it for 2 months I would say.  I recently updated to webOS 1.2.1 and I have gotten many problems.  First, and foremost, my palm pre's screen like to RANDOMLY come on.  Just out of the blue.  When I pull it out of my pocket, 80% of the time the screen is on.  I make sure not to touch any buttons.  It will do it when it is just sitting on my desk, also.  I have noticed that the Ev symbol is always lit up as if I was accessing the data network when the screen lights up.  It doesn't show the main screen like it would if you slide the phone up, rather, it shows the lock screen.  The button still performs like it always has and I have never dropped this phone before.  I'm not for sure what is wrong with it.  I don't feel like driving 20 miles to the Sprint store to have them tell me "Sorry, can't help.. unless you give us $100!"

Another big problem is the battery.  My friend has a palm pre also.  When he takes his battery out, you can see a small piece of foam in the indention of the phone where the top of the battery hits the phone.  My phone doesn't have that. I think this is one reason my battery unseats itself ALL THE TIME!  I have noticed on webOS 1.2.1 that my palm pre really has a hard time figuring out what network it should be on wether it be roaming, EVDO, 1x, Sprint, etc.  It is always changing on me even if the phone is sitting still in one area in a EVDO region.  I have also notices with the webOS 1.2.1 that the phone gets pretty warm.  Especially where the pins on the phone hit the Touchstone charger back cover.

What do you think I should do guys?  Thank You.

Also,

My "C" button tends to not work from time to time. I really have to press it in to get it to work.

If the device is in your pants pocket then I can see you possibly turning the device on without knowing.  Not saying this is the case but it is one that you should examine.

The battery, from what I understand a change was made to the design of the batter, something that caused it to fit in tighter.  I suspect that you have one of the older ones.  People here have reported that talking to Palm could result in a battery being sent to you.  After this fix to the battery I have noticed that the shut off issues has stopped.  I suggest you work with sprint or palm to get a new battery.

The network issue has been reported in other threads.  It has been suggested that a full rest of the device might help this.

The stuck key.  While I am aware (and we still have no answer for) of issues with the keyboard just stop working, this stuck key issue I think has been mentioned in another thread.  I think the scratch reload of the device might have fixed it.  Not sure on this one.

Sorry I could not be more help.

Re: Palm Pre PROBLEMS!

I thought that I was turning the phone on while in my pants pocket too, but I can't explain the screen turning on while sitting on my desk.  And what do you mean by "It has been suggested that a full rest of the device might help this."? If you meant 'reset', trust me. I've done it. Partial erase, Full erase, webOS Doctor. Doesn't fix it.

Yes the usual answer from support on these issues is PArtial erase, Full erase.  It has been pointed out to my by a moderator that this does fix a lot of issues.  Reminds me of the old computer support line.  Did you reboot?

Some of these issues do seem software related and to some extent the advice can be sound.  The question is do you really want to reboot your phone several times a day? I hate to say it but my iPhone has not been reset in over 40 days, and that reset was due to software install but then again the iPhone OS is much more mature.  I will be honest and admit my iPhone did lock up one time.

As to the phone turn on.  I do think that is it.  However you can test this very easy.

The last resort is to call Palm support directly and se if they know anything.  I bet they have you do the same steps.  However, at that point if it can't be fixed they should send you a new device.
