Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

[ Edited ]

I have major problems with calendar. Events created in Google show on the Pre. But:

* events created on the Pre often don't arrive in Google;
* some that do arrive are scrambled, with all-day events timed strangely or entered multiple times;
* the date on the single-day calendar view is missing, so you can't see what date it is.

All this is pretty crucial to me. I've tried deleting and reloading my Google account.

It's bad enough that only two months of future events are synced; I might not have bothered with the Pre 2 if I'd known about that. Can these other bugs be resolved?

Re: Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

Here's an interesting issue -- I tried moving to Yahoo calendar to see if I would be able to sync more than two months' worth of data.  I wasn't able to successfully build a Yahoo calendar in my Pre 2 (WebOS 2.0.1) so I deleted it last night.

This morning I got a calendar reminder for an entry I had made in the Yahoo calendar labeled "Test."  It appears I have a stealth Yahoo calendar on my cell phone! :smileysurprised:

I also loaded an app called iCallmporter to see if I could at least create a calendar using iCal files.  The error message read, "not permitted to send to com.palm.accounts."

Will be importing those iCal files into my Outlook at work to see if I can sync more than two months' worth of date through an Exchange server.

Re: Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

Using an iCal file, I plugged two years' worth of calendar events (Jan. 1, 2010 to Dec. 31, 2011) into Outlook.  I then added a couple of iCal files to plug in daily calendar events from Jan. 1, 2012 to Dec. 31, 2013).  When I set up an exchange account in my Pre 2, I got all of the calendar events from Nov. 18, 2010 through Dec. 31, 2013.

It would be nice to have the older calendar events available on the phone, but not crucial ... I can access them through a Google calendar search, or on my work computer, if necessary.  So I'm not as panicked as I was last night.

Obviously, fully syncing calendar information backward and forward in all of the supported calendar programs, would be nice.

Re: Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

[ Edited ]

Today I was trying to change the date on an Outlook calendar entry on the Pam Pre 2, from today, to next Thursday, when the event will actually be held.  I would put in the new date on the Pre 2, but the entry wouldn't budge.  Syncing didn't move it.

So I recategorized it as a Palm Profile calendar entry. I made the change, which it accepted immediately, changed the date, which it recognized immediately, then recategorized it as an Outlook calendar entry, which it recognized immediately ... and also appeared in my Outlook calendar at work.

I don't know if that will work with Google as well.  It does add a few steps that shouldn't be necessary ... but at least I was able to make the change.

Re: Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

Update. After long chats with Palm support, I tried reloading the OS with webOS Doctor. That seemed to sort out the calendar problems - but only for a couple of days. Then they returned.

Still, thanks for the going-via-Palm-Profile-calandar tip. It's ridiculous that such a workaround is needed - but my initial tries with it have, it must be said, been quite promising.

I have some hope that such bugs can be fixed in the not too distant future. And I hope that HP/Palm soon realises that the time restrictions of what you can sync - which are deliberate, not an error (http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/emea/pre/pre2/unlockedeu/solutions/article/43761_en.html#20) - are just unsustainable. "Google accounts sync events one month back and two months forward....Exchange accounts sync events two weeks back and unlimited forward." Totally inadequate!

Re: Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

Does this suggest that I could get more than 2 months of prospective Googal calendar data if I use ical instead of the xml option for google calendar?

Has anyone heard anything remotely promising from Palm/HP about allowing synchronization of all future google calendar appointments to a palm pre 2 (cdma)?

Re: Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

I'm another webOS user who definitely needs a reliable calendar synchronisation for more than two months ahead. Please, HP-Palm, change your synchronisation politics. If you are afraid about performance issues, you can create a time limit as a preference option.

Kind regards

Re: Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

I've had ongoing issues with my Palm Pre 2 and syncing to Google Calendar.  I have several calendars for several jobs and the various calendars have been lost in my Palm Pre but maintained in Google Calendar.  It's been on and off for several months now.  I've been able to re-enter in all the appointments in Google and they show up again in Palm Pre but it's been a hassle every time.  I've given up and gone to Yahoo Calendar and it seems to work.

Like other users, I'd like more synchronization than just 2 months.  That's very limiting if I want to trade work/shifts around and have to go to a computer each time to check.  My preference would be a setting to allow the user to decide how many months in advance we'd like to sync if the issue is time/resources taken for syncing.

Re: Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

I am also having issues with Gmail on the Pre 2. Emails are deleting by themselves, keeping no more than a day's emails on the Pre. Both read and unread emails are deleting. All emails remain intact on the PC.Email is also not syncing automatically to the phone, but syncs when I refresh on the Pre.

Re: Calendar problems: Pre 2 and Google Calendar

First, I do not have a Pre 2 but a Palm Pre Plus via Verizon but they should be set up similarly with you having the better operating system they promised us but then told us to bend over.  In any case -

I have more than 2 months worth of syncs for Calendars and always have.  I sync to Outlook via a third party sync (Chapura Software) to sync all other functions but email.  Email is synced automatically from Frontier.com (as well as other email services) and it syncs no other functions but email off its servers to my Palm Pre Plus and Outlook on my laptop.  I also use Google as a back up calendar because Microsoft products have let me down historically so many times over the last ten years I create backups of its data everywhere I can.  I sync Google to Outlook with a one way sync using Google sync software that pushes data from Outlook to Google only.  I then sync the Google calendar to the Palm Pre Plus so I have a duplicate on my phone.  The only issues I ever have is sometimes the Google calendar will have duplicates, triplicates, quadruplicates of certain items (not all) in the calendar.  So about every 4-6 months I clear the Google Calendar and resync and that clears it.  Why you are only getting two months I can only guess is a limitation in one of your sync settings, but most likely not on your HP/Palm Pre 2.

As far as the emails deleting, most email packages have settings set up that you can change that allow you to keep or delete emails after they go to the Palm Pre 2 or your computer from wherever they come from.  You can set these to either always keep a copy on your server, or never keep one on the server typically once it pushes the data out.  For instance my home email is from Frontier.com which I push to my laptop to Outlook.  It usually hits my phone first after it goes to Frontier but not always.  If it goes to my phone first and I delete then I never see it in my Outlook email.  If it goes to my laptop first and I don't look at it on my phone, then it will appear then disappear from my phone.  I have that email set that once Frontier pushes it out, no copy is kept on that server.  I also have Gmail pushed to my phone which works differently.  I can delete from either side which impacts the other side and I set a time frame on my phone on how old I can see my email via the phone.  I can also see all of my own created folders from GMiail and move email aroundl.  I also have Windows Live.com (essentially Hotmail) that works differently than GMail as messages must always be read on the phone if they get to the phone.  If I delete them off the phone before they make it to my laptop then they are deleted, otherwise they appear and must be read on both.  No personal created folders for Windows live Mail appear on the phone like it does for GMail so I have to move them around only on my laptop.

My guess regardign your Gmail is that your setting on the Pre 2 for Gmail is to only keep the email for one day on your phone regardless if you delete it or not.  Go to your email setting.  Hit preferences and account once their via the launcher (upper left corner).  Then hit the GMail account.  A bunch of options should show up one of which allows you to set time frames to see your Gmail one of which is all which will show all of it to you.  I have mine set for two weeks so older than two weeks is not on the phone.  There is an option for one month and two weeks, all, and a lot of shorter time frames.  Good luck!
