I'm posting this here because I assume it's a software issue.
While stationary, I will have 5 bars of Ev, then it will bounce around to 1,3 etc.. go into roaming, then come back to 5 bars Ev. Sitting another phone next to it yields consistent signal strength. Disabling roaming forces it to stay on the Sprint Network, but the signal strength still bounces around and it hops between Ev and 1x. In a location where I know I have a strong EvDO signal, this still happens.
Checking other Pre forums, there are quite a few people having the same issue. I imagine this doesn't help the battery life. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I see this as well.
Sprint is a CDMA carrier, and the "signal strength" indication is *not*. It factors in a bunch of things that affect the usability of a CDMA signal, not just raw -dBm, so it's prone to jump around a bit.
My problem, personally, is that at desk-level at my desk in my office, it jumps to 0 and, if I let it, roams to Alltel (I've forced it not to). Hopefully a solution can be found for that, cause that's an RTM error.

The signal strength indicator isn't really intended to be precise and that doesn't bother me, but the fact that it's hopping into roaming, then on DO with 5 bars, then to 1x, etc.... that's a serious bug. I can be sitting with 4 bars of EvDO and then instantly, 1 bar on a roaming carrier.. very strange.
It really cripples the device.
