Is HP/Palm working on a fix for the PDF viewing problems

For several months, I've been having issues viewing PDFs on my Pre, and though I find lots of information confirming same, I can't find any evidence that HP/Palm is doing anything about it.  Getting tired of sending myself links so I can view PDFs on a computer....what about it HP/Palm?

While I'm not happy I fell for all the hype about Flash support, I'm probably more upset I can't even view many PDFs using this device.

Re: Is HP/Palm working on a fix for the PDF viewing problems

I certainly hope so, but we will have to wait and see what WebOS 2.0 brings.

I believe the problem is that both the Office doc viewer and the PDF viewer are from the same DataViz and they have stopped developing for the Palm- it's a sad trend.

You have to wonder why HP is not doing more to keep users on Pre/ WebOS tech. I bet many people will be looking to Android when their contracts expire soon. Android has better support for business users.

Re: Is HP/Palm working on a fix for the PDF viewing problems

The PDF View application has been developed and is maitained by Palm.  The Doc View application is a view only version of DataViz's Document To Go.

In the fall of 2010, the DataViz Documents To Go technology (ie: source code, IP, and employess) was acquired by Research In Motion, yes, the BlackBerry people, and RIM decided to stop development of Documents To Go for webOS.

If I'm not mistaken, QuickOffice will be incuded with webOS in the future.

Re: Is HP/Palm working on a fix for the PDF viewing problems

Thanks for the reply...any thoughts as to whether Palm/HP are going to do anything about it (meaning the PDF viewer problems)?  I can't say I'm surprised to hear the viewer is being supported (maybe not supported is a more accurate statement) by Palm (based on how they've delivered on all the Flash promises they made!).

Hi Alan, that is interesting to read. Both the PDF viewer and the DocView aps exhibit the same problem on hibernate- they both loc up. If they are written by two differnt groups, perhaps the lockup problem is something in WebOS?

I guess we can only wait to see if this is fixed in WebOS 2 when (if) we get it on the old Pre units.

Re: Is HP/Palm working on a fix for the PDF viewing problems

wilsonkg I don't have access to a Palm Pre 2, so I don't know what the status is of the PDF View application is with webOS 2.0.

It is rumored that QuickOffice will replace Doc Viewer.  When I checked the unlocked Palm Pre 2 website, an Office document suite was not listed.

Re: Is HP/Palm working on a fix for the PDF viewing problems

espana2004,

I am not aware of any lock up issue with PDF View on my Sprint Palm Pre.  I do know that you need a hack to enable landscape support and that the document title bar appears on top of the search bar.  (I believe that there is a hack to address that issue also.)

What issue are you seeing?  How do you get your device to lock up?  I tried opening the Open Source Information PDF file (it should be on all of the webOS devices), turn off my Pre, and then turned on my Pre again and was able to resume working with the PDF normally.  I was able to turn pages and zoom in/out of the document.

[ Edited ]

hi, there are a couple of treads on the problem from Spring 2010:

zoom in and let the device wait for the Pre to autopower off. The bug happens with PDF and all office apps.

Re: Is HP/Palm working on a fix for the PDF viewing problems - I'm Fixed

[ Edited ]

Hi Pre Fanatics,

I have fixed my problem opening PDF attached to email.

Just delete app for landscape view of e-mails. Voila!

Might as well quit banging on HP to fix. The solution is right in your pocket.
