Depends what format the movie is in? I use this program here, its free and works. http://handbrake.fr/?article=download Once you download that run it. On the right choose the Iphone and Ipod touch preset. Click Source to choose your movie. Then choose your destination. Then click Start. Will take awhile to convert. But once your done it will output a movie file. Plug the Pre into the computer. Choose USB drive. Then copy that movie file to the Pre drive. Then start the Video App. It should show that movie now and play.

This all assumes that the video file is not the correct format. If it already is you dont need to do anything really. But handbrake is nice because as long as you choose the Iphone preset it will compress the movie so its not so big and still looks great on the pre.

BTW the pre supports Video Formats: MPEG-4, H.263, H.264 . So if its not that format, use the handbrake program and choose iphone preset and it will make it playable.

Re: Playing movies on palm pre

I have put a lot of movies on the Pre reformatted using Handbrake to H264 and so far I have had three that received an error message.  The funny thing about the ones that gave the error is I could see them playing just fine behind the error message screen.  If you click on OK the video will stop and go away.  If you ignore it the video will continue and after a time out on the error message the video will stop and go away.

I contacted Palm support and they thought it was a Pre software issue.  They made note of it and said they would forward it to someone who cared (my words not theirs).

Re: Playing movies on palm pre

Just got a Pre today and successfully converted an .avi file using HandBrake.  Very cool application.

The .avi file was created for use on my TX from a DVD using Pocket DVD Studio for Palm.  I didn't change a thing in any of the default output settings...just chose the iPhone and iPod Touch output as suggested.  The conversion took about 15 minutes, and moving it to the Pre was another 6 minutes.

The original .avi file (a movie about 1:45 long) was about 282 MB, and the resulting .m4v file is 460 MB...yikes!!  The good thing is that playback is very sharp and smooth.

I guess it'll take some time playing with the settings like frame rate, etc. to ramp the file size down.

I'm going to "sticky" this thread here, as a companion thread to the other thread here about watching DVD and other video content on (other) Palm devices.

Let's share settings, conversion apps (no commercial advertisements, please, just user recommendations).

dont mess with the frame rate, leave it the same.a lower bit rate would reduce your file size say ,480x320 resolution and a bite rate of around 520-768 depending on hte quality you want.i would use the mp4 settings since we cant use xvid on the pre (for whatever reason),you'll have more control over your file instead of just clicking iphone.also get a file splitter and try fooling around with a small part of the movie,2-3minute clip until you find settings that you like, then remember them.btw if you have an avi that was 282mb and 1:45:00 long then either it was really small resolution or really crappy video because that compression mb and length is almost impossiblefor anything decent,,get gspot and see what the original file was.  and with a high resolution for these small screens its gonna be hard to get a small file encoded for these phone, even on tv 352x240 mpeg1/vcd is smaller resolution then the 480x320 of the pre,not that mpeg1 was enjoyable at all back in hte day

Don't know if you have ever watched video on a Palm TX, but that resolution is not at all crappy on a small screen.  Same with the Pre...I changed the "target file size" setting in HandBrake to 300 MB, and reconverted the file.  The conversion came out a few MB over 300 (something in the teens, I think).  Moved the movie over to the Pre, and it looks and plays great on the Pre.

Re: Playing movies on palm pre

I've used MeGUI alongside its presets for x264 and produce some amazing content with it.  Having never used Handbrake, I can't vouch for how simple it is in comparison to MeGUI (megui.sourceforge.net).

Having said that, it is geared toward someone who knows more about encoding and don't have the "super easy" interface a novice needs-- BUT with a little know-how, transcoding to h.264 video can be a super-cinch.

In regard to file size, it can be expected that if Handbrake is set up with a low Quality Quantizer (meaning better quality) or a high Average Bitrate, that the output you get can actually be larger than the source .AVI.  Since h.264 is geared toward quality-driven output instead of fixed-bitrate output, I always encode with a Quantizer of 22 and never use Average Bitrates (even with 2-pass encoding). ABR always gives you variable quality.

it makes no sense to have a larger file than the original, although it happens, because you will never improve the original file quality.taking an avi or mpeg and converting to any other codec or file will only degrade it and even with avisynth and scripts and filters your really never going to improve the original file without professional equipment.quantizers are fine, and easier than dealing with bitrates yourself, but will still boil down to bitrates.also considering these videos are for phones the bit rate range i said,at single pass would be fine.all 2 pass will do is create a variable bit rate through out the movie, higher bitrates for actions scenes and lower for less moving scene, which is fine for the tv,but takes alot longer as you are essentially encoding it twice,a ghost encode for information for the real encode, and again its only a phone,so i wouldnt bother with a 2 pass

smkranz ,

i didnt realize the original avi you had came off another portable device, explaining its original size, sorry bout that

and yeah, you can make about anything look good on a 3" screen,i have one at 480x320 768bps and it looks hd,,standard size for tv is 720x480 although with avis that changes radically,562x352,things like that, those still look great on tv,even 62" screen,so when you take 480x 320,which you could easily watch on tv and smack it on a small screen, its goin to look pretty good

also on my last post when i said lower bit rate will make a smaller file,i forgot to add that it will also reduce the movies quality, perhaps dramatically

Re: Playing movies on palm pre

Corel DVDCopy 6 also has a good DVD to iPod converter that works well.
