Re: Speaker not working after unplugging headphone

I just had this problem and managed to get my handset speaker working again in phone mode.

I read through this whole thread and experimented based on what you all said.

So to fix it I called my voicemail and with the headphones on plugged them in and unplugged them repeatedly until one time I unplugged them and the headphone icon in the lower left corner turned back into a phone.

I guess if you trigger the headphone toggle enough the Pre will finally notice.

I'm not going to plug those headphones in again...  that sucked.

Re: Speaker not working after unplugging headphone

Just to add to the thread . . .

I had the same exact issue.  Was listening to Pandora through 3rd party headphones.  Afterwards, I removed the headphones and the Pre speaker stopped working,  I tried various things including plugging and unplugging the headphones to no avail.  So I went to my local Sprint store and the salesperson verified my issue and then pulled out a set of the ear buds provided with Pre, plugged them in and pulled them out and the phone started working properly again.

Seems to me this could be hardware related?  Possibly an internal toggle switch is not being set/rest properly?  Not sure but if it happens again I will try all the ideas posted in this theread and hoepfully it will fix the issue.

Re: Speaker not working after unplugging headphone

[ Edited ]

I don't think this is a software issue. I have not used any headsets or ran the pandora application on my phone. I have a new Pre (5 days old) that is randomly switching to headset mode. I noticed this after turning on the silence mode switch on top of the phone. I cannot say what is causing it, I fear it's a symptom of a bad design or cheap parts. The only work around I have is to switch to speaker phone when this happens. Another odd thing I noticed is that when it does get stuck in headset mode the light sensor does not work and the phone does not dim when I place my head against it. This causes the touch screen to still work and launch apps with my ear.

I have reset the phone and that seemed to correct it, but the problem randomly returns.  On another issue, the battery seems to be too small for the Pre as it will reset after closing the slider. I have corrected it by placing tape on the battery to make it fit more snugly into the Pre. Just a note I keep my Pre in a case and am very careful with it.  Maybe I have a bad Pre.

Palm please look into this issue.

Re: Speaker not working after unplugging headphone

Same issue here, plugging and unplugging worked, but I had the same issue again the next day.  Really hope this isn't a hardware issue.  Can Palm confirm they KNOW this is software and we shouldn't be returning  our phones?

Re: Speaker not working after unplugging headphone

Just a follow up. I tried to use some WD40 on a 3.5mm jack to clean the sensor for the headphones. This seems to have done something good (kind of). When my phone switches to headset mode (without a headset in it) I can get it to go back to handset mode by smacking the back of the phone with a moderate (not hard) smack on my hand.  I am not recommending you smack your phone up, but it's not such an annoying issue for me now.

Palm please address this issue as it is a pretty serious FAIL of your product.

Hi Folks,

Are you sure this is a software issue?

Thanks.

Re: Speaker not working after unplugging headphone

Thank you for the suggestion, I tried every other workaround, but this one worked for me and offered me the ability to be able to see my progress as I was toggling into the jack, watching the speaker button waver between the phone symbol and the earphones symbol.  I noticed that the switch was somewhere on the sides of the jack rather than the front or back. This workaround took several attempts, don't give up!

Re: Speaker not working after unplugging headphone

Okay folks.  iI tried EVERY suggestion on this and other forums regarding this issue, e.g., repeated plugging/unplugging, WD40_ soft resets, uninstall Pandora, tap on the back of the phone, etc..  The solution that worked was the simple one.  Call your voicemail with a headset plugged.  I tapped the mute button.  Tapped it again.  Unplugged the headset and BOOM the problem was solved.  I think the mute command was reset the whole process.  Nothing else worked for me except this procedure.  I am guessing that something else may do the trick, but not for me.  Give it a try before suffering the misery of the Sprint repair center visit!!

Re: Speaker not working after unplugging headphone

Probably not the call to voicemail and mute unmute that did it but instead was just coincidence that that pluginng unplugging of the headset did the trick. Have a feeling this is a hardware issue and not software.

Re: Speaker not working after unplugging headphone

I hate beating a dead horse and this is a very weird suggestion. But my phone goes in and out of the headphone mode seemingly randomly.  I found I can actually get it out of headphone mode by blowing into the headphone jack like it was a coke bottle (like you would to a coke bottle to make it toot like a flute). I know that sounds really dumb and I swear I am not kidding. But if you don't have a head phone to plug into the jack try it.

You have to blow forcefully but it only takes 1 or 2 tries and it's a pretty quick but LAME (pay attention Palm) fix. I have used WD40 on a headphone jack to try and fix/clean the senor so that might have something to do with why blowing into the jack works.

Good luck and Palm please address this issue!
